Judd & Marfa
In the early 1970s, Judd acquired property in Marfa, Texas, and the ranch lands of Presidio County. He gradually acquired a number of buildings in town, converting each to have a specific purpose and demonstrating sensitivity to the original structures while maximizing light and space. These living and working spaces are now managed by Judd Foundation and include the artist’s residence, art studio, architecture studio, library, archives, and ranch office.
Most of the properties contain permanent installations of work by Donald Judd, as well as art he collected, and the remaining buildings house offices and collections support facilities.
In 1986, Judd founded the Chinati Foundation to oversee the large-scale public art works he originally commissioned for Dia. Judd Foundation and Chinati Foundation are two separate organizations, with distinct boards and staff, which share the same founder and support a shared legacy.
Judd Foundation has been involved in an orderly process of restoration and access for its Texas properties and continues to identify additional restoration projects, some of which require significant ongoing maintenance due to their location in the high desert region.
