Judd Foundation Updates

The sale of 36 works by Donald Judd from the Judd Foundation in Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art sale on May 9 and May 10 2005 raised $27,788,400 including buyer's premium, far surpassing Christie's high estimate. The funds will form the cornerstone of an endowment that will help the Foundation to fulfill its mission as mandated by Donald Judd, "to maintain and preserve the artist's permanently installed living and working spaces, libraries and archives in Texas and New York" and to promote a wider appreciation of Judd's artistic legacy by facilitating public access to these resources and developing scholarly and educational programs. As a result of the sale, the Foundation will soon be able to complete plans for the restoration of 101 Spring Street, Judd's New York home and studio; undertake much needed maintenance on the artist's 16 private living and working spaces in Marfa, Texas; provide new public programs at both locations; prepare the archives for public access; and start work on the Donald Judd catalogue Raisonné, among other important projects. Additional private and public sources will also be required to complete the restoration of 101 Spring Street and to build the endowment in coming years.

Upcoming Events

Judd Foundation and Chinati Foundation Open House, Marfa, Texas Saturday, October 7 through Sunday, October 8, 2006.

Donald Judd inaugurated Open House in 1986 as an annual tradition that brings together the local community with visitors from across the United States and abroad.

In addition to its annual opening up of Ayala de Chinati/The Block, Donald Judd's primary residence and studio in Marfa, and the Sunday barbecue at his ranch, Casa Perez, Judd Foundation's participation this year includes a number of new initiatives.

At the Print Building on Highland Avenue, Judd Foundation will mount a unique exhibition of prototypes of Judd's early furniture, offering a rare opportunity to see works handmade by Judd himself. In fact, many of the pieces in the show have never been displayed in a public context. On view together for the first time, these seminal designs are the basis for Judd's exploration of commercial furniture design.

Another first for Judd Foundation is the opening up of Cobb House and Whyte Building (informally known as Schindler House) on Saturday October 7. These buildings and the adjoining gatehouse were renovated by Judd in the early 1990s to hold his early paintings from 1956 to 1962 and are open to the general public for the first time. VIP tours of Judd's other private spaces will be arranged throughout Friday and Saturday, however these must be booked in advance as space is limited. Please call Blue Medium at (212) 675-1800.

On Saturday October 7, at noon, Judd Foundation previews its Oral History Project at the Goode Crowley Theater with a screening of Marfa Voices, a work-in-progress which explores Judd's involvement with Marfa as a community. Co-directed by Karen Bernstein and Rainer Judd, the screening is a collection of vivid anecdotes and personal reflections by Marfa residents who had special connections to Donald Judd's artistic practice in Marfa. The film portrays an intimate view of the artist as a town resident for nearly 20 years.

Finally, Judd Foundation and The Chinati Foundation jointly host a town dinner on Saturday evening at 6:30 PM on Highland Avenue, followed by a free performance at The Ice Plant by the Dandy Warhols. Throughout the weekend there will be open viewing of Chinati's collection. Chinati has also mounted a special installation by Robert Irwin and an exhibition of paintings by Josef Albers.

If you are attending Open House or would like further information, please contact Valerie Breuvart at (432) 729-4406 or vbreuvart@juddfoundation.org.

Oral History Launch: New York

In November 2006, Judd Foundation officially launches its Oral History Project, which aims to build upon the current historical record of the artist by recording and archiving interviews with artists, curators and writers who worked with Judd, as well as with his fabricators and studio assistants.

Catalogue Raisonné

Judd Foundation has begun work on the much-awaited Donald Judd Catalogue Raisonné and will be sending out an update on the submission process to collectors in the near future.

Furniture

An exhibition of Judd Furniture held in June and July 2006 at JGM Galerie, Paris, France was a tremendous success. A small catalogue accompanied the exhibition and is available from the gallery. Judd Furniture will be featured as an icon of design in the October 8 issue of the New York Times design magazine, T. The article will be written by Charlotte Druckman.
