Ayala De Chinati Ranch overview
Beginning in 1976, Judd turned his focus to expanding beyond the town of Marfa. He began purchasing ranch land in the Presidio County region close to the Mexican border, on the south side of the Chinati mountain range. Located between 34 and 80 miles from Marfa, the three ranch properties that Judd purchased provide insight into his concept of rural architecture as well as land conservation.
From 1989 to 1991, Judd continued to acquire property adjacent to the ranches in an attempt to prevent future development of the surrounding land. At the time of his death, Judd owned nearly 40,000 acres of undeveloped ranch land.
Ayala de Chinati /Casa Morales & Casa Perez
The two ranch houses that comprise Morales Ranch were purchased by Donald Judd in 1976. Casa Morales, a rustic two-bedroom rock house, remains furnished as it was during Judd’s lifetime. Casa Perez, located directly off of Pinto Canyon Road, is also a two-bedroom house furnished by Judd and includes two wall pieces. Both houses contain Judd furniture as well as Mexican-style ranch furniture. Morales Ranch is the inspiration for the artist’s thoughts and writings on land.
Ayala de Chinati/ Las Casas
Judd purchased this last and largest ranch property in June 1989. Las Casas consists of four main buildings, including research facilities, communal meeting spaces, and an artist’s studio. The building that houses Judd’s living quarters is outfitted with the artist’s architectural designs for windows, doorways, sinks, and fire hearths. Las Casas is also the location of the artist’s grave.
Judd Foundation offices are closed Saturday and Sunday.
Any reservation made over the weekend will not be processed until the following Monday.
